About heyokadesign

heyokadesign is a personal website and showcase of works by Mark Caron. His portfolio is comprised of websites, artwork & paintings, photography, logo designs, and more. He can't take credit for everything since some of the web design works were created alongside many of the talented folks at Atlantic BT. Atlantic BT is a small web design and online solutions company based in Raleigh, North Carolina. However, heyokadesign doesn't not necessarily reflect the opinions and views of Atlantic BT, even though we do play together well (most often on the foosball table).

Can I get Mark to do work for me?

Certainly. Please contact Mark directly with requests about the following:

What is heyoka (hay-o-kah)?

If you're curious about the choice of the name for the site, you've come to the right spot. Briefly, heyokadesign spawned from Mark's obsession with the heyoka. The heyoka are a sacred group within the Lakhota-Sioux who have had a vision from Wakinyan and are now called to do everything backwards. However, due to the name conflict and the Lakhota people's "declaration of war" the name for the site has become one word heyokadesign. With that said, heyokadesign is a personal site and doesn't seek to exploit the Lakota culture in any way. It is simply a name — one that has become an identity on its own.

However if you'd like to read more about the heyoka, Mark wrote a paper about them for one of his Native American religions classes. Please read Impersonating Heyo'ka.

RSS Feeds

RSS, which stands for Really Simple Syndication, is an XML feed that "syndicates" information from a particular source. This allows users to "subscribe" to websites (or sections of websites) continually. It's kind of like getting a newspaper delivered to your doorstep for free! But, of course, it's on the inter-web instead. Currently heyokadesign is only offering one feed which is listed below. However re-use of this feed is subject to licensing under Creative Commons Attribution-Noncommercial-No Derivative Works 3.0. Please give credit where appropriate.

Do you have an RSS reader? Mark prefers Firefox's built in RSS feature called Live Bookmark. But if you like to support the Google conquest over planet Earth, you can use that as well.

Simply find the RSS Feed symbol throughout this site.

Forgot to mention...

Mark really likes to program sometimes. He's not sure if it stems from building things with Legos® as a kid, but it's building stuff nonetheless. This site has been pieced together with really pretty XHTML and CSS (which you probably read already), run by ASP and XML code in the background. Pretty nifty, eh?

What's the difference? Well, through experience sifting through ugly code generated by many so-called web designers, Mark began to feel a bit like a standardista; pulling his hair out when he sees developers and programmers produce garbage XHTML. If you're one of these sad cases, please learn how you can help advance the web instead of holding us all back (that goes for you guys over at Microsoft too).
