For some reason most of my ideas come to me in the weirdest places and in the oddest of times. Like my idea for "As a Man," for instance — I was in the shower.
Looking down at myself in the shower, I was thinking about what Christ went through. What He must have felt and seen from His position on the cross. Although a bit morbid, I think it's important for us to know what it was like for Him. What would it be like to sacrifice yourself for people like us? Mel Gibson's movie, The Passion of the Christ really helps show the extent of His sufferring.
This painting is a reflection on our debts paid. What if we are put on the cross instead? But, because of His sacrifice we won't have to suffer and instead we're co-heirs to His glory.
"Now if we are children, then we are heirs—heirs of God and co-heirs with Christ, if indeed we share in his sufferings in order that we may also share in his glory."
- Rom. 8:17
Although it has been debated that this painting should be displayed upside-down, that would defeat the purpose/meaning and reflection of the painting. But it would certainly be more easily identifiable to see Christ on the cross.
